Gardening with Toddlers: Why It's Essential for Child Development

As the April showers appear and make way for May flowers, we thought it was the perfect opportunity to teach our students all about plants! For the next few weeks, students will be immersed in lessons on nature, using this opportunity to strengthen their connection between nature and development, what happens when we plant seeds, and hands-on activities in and out of the classroom.

What children learn from planting:

Gardening with toddlers may not sound ideal at first. But it’s the perfect opportunity for children to learn and play freely in and out of the classroom! Gardening allows children to engage in meaningful, play-based learning experiences such as:

  • Planting and caring for pretend ( & real) plants

  • Exploring soil and seeds in sensory play

  • sorting and identifying different types of plants

  • Tasting fruits and vegetables and learning where they come from

  • Creating beautiful plant-inspired art, like leaf printing and flower crafts

  • Participating in fun movement games like “growing” from a seed into a flower.

The connection between nature + development:

As parents, we have a front row seat in seeing our kids do as plants do - grow every passing day with nurture and care! As students study plants, they will learn the importance of nurturing and caring for living things such as plants.
